Data sources and methodology

Data sources

Data are collected from other Statistics Canada surveys and/or other sources.

This data base combines information from several surveys conducted by Statistics Canada. Demographic and labour force related characteristics of population come from the April Labour Force Survey (LFS) (SDDS ID 3701), and the rent data from a monthly supplement of that survey on rents. Information on income is obtained from the Survey of Consumer Finances (SDDS ID 3502), while details on dwelling characteristics and household facilities are taken from the Household Facilities and Equipment Survey (SDDS ID 3505). (The Survey of Consumer Finances and the Household facilities and Equipment Survey are both conducted on the same LFS sub-sample, but in different months.) Only private households are represented in the Household Facilities by Income and Other Characteristics (HIFE) publication, including households residing in mobile homes, trailers or boats.

Error detection

Each survey maintains its own independent edit and imputation procedures, but the general approach is compatible. For further information on data quality refer to catalogue 13-218, or to the individual survey publications 64-202 and 13-207. Standard error of average household income is included in the report.

Imputation

Each usable record is weighted by: 1) a simple survey weight that reflects the sample design and incorporates the inverse of the sampling ratio (which varies significantly by geographic area) and the differential response rate, and 2) a final weight created by applying a ratio estimation procedure to the simple survey weight. This procedure incorporates independent, census-derived control totals of the population by province, age, sex and subprovincial area, and of households (1 person and 2 or more persons), economic families and census families.

Disclosure control

Statistics Canada is prohibited by law from releasing any information it collects that could identify any person, business, or organization, unless consent has been given by the respondent or as permitted by the Statistics Act. Various confidentiality rules are applied to all data that are released or published to prevent the publication or disclosure of any information deemed confidential. If necessary, data are suppressed to prevent direct or residual disclosure of identifiable data.

In order to prevent any data disclosure, confidentiality analysis is done using the Statistics Canada Generalized Disclosure Control System (G-Confid). G-Confid is used for primary suppression (direct disclosure) as well as for secondary suppression (residual disclosure). Direct disclosure occurs when the value in a tabulation cell is composed of or dominated by few enterprises while residual disclosure occurs when confidential information can be derived indirectly by piecing together information from different sources or data series.
