Classification of age categories by five-year age groups

This classification was approved as a departmental standard on May 22, 2007.

The five-year age groups can be collapsed to form larger categories to suit a particular data set or analytical purpose. The collapsed categories should be created by combining entire five-year age groups, respecting the category boundaries of this classification.

Where the population has a lower age limit, the first category should respect the category boundaries of the classification to the extent possible. For example, in health surveys where the population included is persons 12 years of age or older, the first category would be "12 - 14". Surveys of the population 18 years of age or older would have "18 - 19" as the first category.
