Classification of family structure for census family
This classification was approved as a departmental standard on October 22, 2007.

Couple family
This class includes families that contain a married or common-law couple (either with or without children). A couple may be of opposite or same sex.

Lone-parent family
This class includes families containing only one parent with his or her child(ren).
