Classification of family structure for economic family

This classification was approved as a departmental standard on October 22, 2007.

Couple family
 
This class includes families that contain a married or common-law couple (either with or without children). A couple may be of opposite or same sex.

In economic families, this class only includes families where the reference person has a legally married spouse or common-law partner in the family.

Couple only
 
This class includes couple families that contain only a couple, with no other persons.
 
1.2
Couple with children
 
This class includes couple families that contain a couple and their children. In the case of economic families, these families may or may not include other relatives.
 
1.3
Couple with other relatives
 
This class includes couple families that contain a couple and other relatives but do not contain children of the couple. This class can apply only to economic families.

Lone-parent family
 
This class includes families consisting of one parent with his or her child(ren).

In economic families, this class only includes families where the reference person has no spouse or partner but does have a child or children in the family.

Other economic family
 
This class includes economic families where the reference person does not have a spouse or partner, nor a child in the family, only other relatives.
