Economic family reference person
This class includes persons who are reference persons within an economic family. The family reference person is determined through procedures specific to each survey. Options include the older spouse or partner, the first spouse or partner listed, the major income earner or the parent in a lone-parent family.

Legally married spouse or common-law partner of economic family reference person
This class includes persons who are members of a couple in which the other member is an economic family reference person. The couple may be of opposite or same sex.
1.3
Child of economic family reference person
This class includes persons who are children of an economic family reference person. They may be children by birth, marriage or adoption or foster children. They can be of any age or marital status.
1.4
Other economic family member
This class includes persons who are economic family persons but who are not the family reference person, are not the legally married spouse or common-law partner of the family reference person and are not a child of the family reference person.

Person not in an economic family
This class includes persons who do not live in an economic family. This includes persons who live with people none of whom are related to them either by blood, marriage, common-law or adoption or are their foster parent or child. Persons living alone are always included here.
