Mobility and migration was approved as a departmental standard on July 15, 1998.
Mobility and migration concerns the movement of persons from one place to another. It includes persons who, in a specified reference period have not moved or have moved from one residence to another. The former are referred to as non-movers and the latter as movers. Movers include non-migrants and migrants. Non-migrants are persons who did move but remained in the same city, town, township, village or Indian Reserve. Migrants include internal migrants who moved to a different city, town, township, village or Indian Reserve within Canada. External migrants include persons who lived outside Canada at the earlier reference date. These external migrants include landed immigrants who moved to Canada but also Canadian-born persons who were out of the country but returned during the reference period.
The reference periods used include One year ago and Five years ago. The population included in the former must be one year of age or older while the population included in the latter must be five years or older.
Mobility status, one year refers to the status of a person with regard to the place of residence on the reference day in relation to the place of residence on the same date one year earlier.
Mobility status, five years refers to the status of a person with regard to the place of residence on the reference day in relation to the place of residence on the same date five years earlier.
