Background

The Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) Cycle 2.1 will provide health information for 133 health regions, including estimates of health determinants, health status and health system utilization.

CCHS Cycle 2.1 is being conducted by Statistics Canada, in partnership with Health Canada, the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) and provincial and territorial ministries of health.

Sample design

The expected sample size for CCHS Cycle 2.1 is 130,000 persons. The target population includes household residents aged 12 and older in all provinces and territories, with the exception of populations on Indian Reserves, Canadian Forces Bases, and in some remote areas.

Data collection began in January 2003 and will continue until December 2003. Both personal and telephone interviews are being conducted, using computer-assisted interviewing software.

Content

The CCHS Cycle 2.1 interview is approximately 45 minutes in length. This consists of: 25 minutes of Common Content asked of all respondents, 5 minutes of ‘Sub-Sample’ Content asked of a sub-sample of respondents large enough to generate reliable provincial and national estimates, 10 minutes of Optional Content determined by the health region in which the respondent lives, and 5 minutes of basic socio-economic and demographic information.

Outputs

Data from CCHS Cycle 2.1 will be released in a variety of forms designed to meet the needs of a wide spectrum of users, including health region planners, provincial ministries of health, Health Canada and academics.

Data will be collected under data sharing agreements with Health Canada and each of the provinces and territories. This will allow Statistics Canada to produce a microdata file for these partners. A public use microdata file (PUMF) will be produced. Access to CCHS microdata will also be available using Statistics Canada's custom tabulation and remote access services. A series of health region profiles will also be available on the Statistics Canada web site.
