Special Open Door Session on Health Data

Objective: To further participants’ understanding of health data available from Statistics Canada and Canadian Institute for Health information (CIHI)

Target Audience: health researchers, data analysts, academics, methodologists

Cost: Free to conference registrants

Description: This session gives participants the opportunity to connect with knowledgeable staff members from each of Statistics Canada and CIHI’s data holdings and explore how these data can be used. This will also allow participants to learn about how to access these data and some of the interesting and varied analytical work and even micro-simulation modelling that is currently underway.

Come with a research question or just your curiosity to discover what’s available and ask questions.

Location: Ottawa Convention Centre, room 205

Length: 3 hours 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Workshops – September 22, 2011

Please note that the workshop 1 has been moved to the Convention Centre.

Introduction to using Canadian Health Measures Survey data

Objective: To introduce participants to basic elements required to use Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS) data files

Pre-requisite: Good knowledge of and ability to use statistical software package (SAS, SPSS, STATA or SUDAAN)

Target audience: Conference attendees who are not familiar with the CHMS and want to learn how to use physical health measures data.

Cost: $50.

Location: Ottawa Convention Centre, room 203

Length: 3 hours 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Content: “What’s available for Cycle 1 CHMS and how to use it”

  • survey parameters, analytical potential
  • data files available & limitations
  • statistical methods for estimation and variance analysis
  • national table development (point estimates)
  • complex CHMS survey design limitations
  • statistical software choices
  • using data for health studies
  • dealing with missing data

Language: This workshop will be given in English by bilingual presenters with hand-outs in English and French.

Introduction to Health Survey Micro-data

Objective: To introduce participants to basic elements required to use CCHS or other Statistics Canada health survey data files

Pre-requisite: Some familiarity with SAS or SPSS.

Target audience: This would be for people who have never used health data from Statistics Canada.

Cost: $50.

Length: 3 hours 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Location: Train Canada (350 Sparks Street, Suite 220, Delta Office Tower, Ottawa)

  • intro into the data files (PUMF, Share, Master, Dummy)
  • a closer look at the information on a share file (data dictionaries, user guides, etc.)
  • how to read in the data files
  • importance of weights
  • calculating simple statistics
  • importance of estimating precision
  • other sources of information

Language: This workshop will be given in English by bilingual presenters with hand-outs in English and French.

Analysis of Health Survey Micro-data

Objective: To assist advanced users in calculating variance and data interpretation

Pre-requisite: Good knowledge of and ability to use SAS or SPSS and basic understanding of information presented in the Workshop: Introduction to Health Survey Micro-data

Target audience: For people who are already familiar with Statistics Canada data and would like to know more about analysis using bootstrap replication techniques

Cost: $50.

Location: Train Canada (350 Sparks Street, Suite 220, Delta Office Tower, Ottawa)

Length: 3 hours 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

  • importance of precision
  • intro to Bootstrap and the Bootstrap weights
  • basic statistics in Bootvar (totals, ratios)
  • hypothesis testing
  • regression analysis
  • 1–year vs. 2–year vs. multi-year estimates
  • combining data
