The 21st International Methodology Symposium, Innovative methods for surveying difficult-to-reach populations, will take place November 3 to 5, 2004 at the Hilton Lac-Leamy Hotel, in Gatineau (10 minutes from downtown Ottawa).

The Statistics Canada Methodology Symposium is an international event addressing issues of statistical methodology relevant to the work of a government statistical agency as well as to a broader statistical community including universities, industry and other organizations.

For this Symposium, we are bringing together statistical methodologists and academic researchers working in a variety of domains related to populations designated as mobile, rare, sensitive, unknown, in remote areas, etc. Workshops on indirect sampling, data mining and neural networks are planned for the first day. For the other two days of the Symposium, plenary and parallel sessions are planned to cover a technical stream and a more general stream. Topics will include:

  • Questionnaire design
  • Sampling frames
  • Sampling issues
  • Data collection
  • Estimation
  • Analysis
  • Mobile populations
  • Surveys on Aboriginal peoples
  • Social surveys
  • Institutional surveys
  • Business surveys

We are soliciting papers with an emphasis on these topics. An abstract of up to 250 words (English or French) must be submitted by May 14, 2004 to be considered. Proceedings from the Symposium will be published and disseminated to participants.

The abstracts must be submitted by e-mail to symposium2004@statcan.gc.ca or by regular mail to:
