The publication is based on the Annual Survey of Manufacturers. This survey collects information on approximately 35,000 manufacturing establishments grouped into 259 national industries. Data collected from the Annual Survey of Manufacturing are now classified according to the 1997 North American Industry Classification System, which replaces the 1980 Standard Industrial Classification. The survey measures manufacturing production and provides an indication of the well-being of each industry and its contribution to the Canadian economy. Manufacturing industries of Canada: National and provincial areas, 1998 includes an analysis of the manufacturing industry and a feature article on "The Development of the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) Manufacturing Time-series, 1990-1997, Outline." It also includes tables on principal statistics, notably shipments, materials purchased and labour data. The publication, Manufacturing industries of Canada: National and provincial areas, 1998 (31-203-XPB, $68) is now available. The data are also available electronically on demand.
