Thursday, April 17, 2003 For-hire Trucking (Commodity Origin and Destination) SurveyFirst and second quarters 2002 (preliminary)Tonnage carried by Canada-based long-distance for-hire carriers amounted to 142 million metric tonnes of freight in the first two quarters of 2002. This was up 4.4% from the 136 million tonnes carried in the same period of 2001. Although domestic activities accounted for 72% of the total tonnage and 80% of the total shipments, transborder movements generated 45% of the total revenues earned and 49% of the total tonne-kilometres for these carriers.
