MAJOR RELEASES

Leading indicators, October 2003
The composite leading indicator continued to strengthen for a fifth straight month, with a 0.6% increase in October after an upward-revised hike of 0.8% in September. These were the largest back-to-back gains since early in 2002.

Net farm income, 2002 
Net cash income - the difference between a farmer's cash receipts and operating expenses - tumbled 11.0% to $7.2 billion in 2002 after setting a record high in 2001. Cash receipts fell for the first time since 1998 in the wake of back-to-back droughts, while higher feed grain costs drove up operating expenses.

Farm cash receipts, January to September 2003
Farm cash receipts fell to their lowest nine-month level in three years between January and September, as the fallout from mad cow disease slashed revenues for cattle farmers.
