Wednesday, May 24, 2006 ![]() Perspectives on Labour and IncomeMay 2006 online edition The May 2006 online edition of Perspectives on Labour and Income, released today, features two articles. "Screening job applicants" looks at the prevalence and trends in the use of security checks, medical examinations, and drug tests in hiring, as well as variations by industry, occupation, workplace size, and selected worker characteristics. "Unemployment since 1971" compares unemployment rates by educational attainment from 1971 to 2005, and finds that the chances of being unemployed are worse today than they were in the early 1970s, especially for those with low education. However, because the unemployment increases occurred while the labour force was becoming better educated and experienced, the overall unemployment rate did not trend upwards. Also available in this edition is an update on retirement age. The May 2006 online edition of Perspectives on Labour and Income, Vol. 7, no. 5 (75-001-XIE, free) is now available.
