Beginning January 2005, Statistics Canada has asked police services to report all hate-motivated crimes, cyber crimes, and incidents linked to organized crime and street gangs. Data from Ottawa and London, the only two police services able to provide a full year of data for 2005, are now available.
Statistics Canada developed these new data elements with the financial assistance of the Multiculturalism Program at Canadian Heritage as well as Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Canada. Survey coverage will be expanded each year and it is anticipated that most police services will be providing this information by 2008.
Definitions, data sources and methods: survey number 3302.
