In December, the average weekly earnings of payroll employees (seasonally adjusted) decreased 0.1% or by $0.71 from November to $782.02. Compared with a year earlier, average weekly earnings were up 3.1%.
In Canada's largest industrial sectors, earnings were up 3.4% in health and social assistance, 2.8% in manufacturing, 2.6% in educational services, and 1.4% in retail trade compared with a year earlier.
Alberta (+4.3%) and Saskatchewan (+5.4%) had the strongest year-over-year earnings growth among all provinces.
Nationally, the number of occupied payroll jobs climbed 13,900 (+0.1%) in December to 14,454,900. Among the provinces, Saskatchewan (+0.8%), Newfoundland and Labrador (+0.3%), British Columbia (+0.3%), Prince Edward Island (-0.3%), and New Brunswick (-0.3%) had the largest month-to-month changes.
The industrial sector showing the strongest employment growth in December was mining and oil and gas extraction (+0.8%).
Overall, payroll employment has grown by 237,100 (+1.7%) since the beginning of 2007.
Employment in the construction sector had the highest growth rate in 2007 at 7.6%, followed by mining, oil and gas extraction (+5.0%).
The average hourly earnings for hourly paid employees edged up 0.1% in December to $19.55. The average weekly hours for hourly paid employees decreased 0.1 hours to 30.9.
