Travel between Canada and other countries

April 2010 (Previous release)

Travel to Canada by foreign residents decreased 1.5% from the previous month to 2.0 million trips, largely the result of a decrease in overnight car trips by United States residents.

Travel by US residents to Canada declined 1.8% from March to 1.6 million trips. Same-day car trips by American residents fell 0.8%, while overnight car travel by US residents to Canada declined 2.8%. Overnight travel by US residents was down for all modes of transportation.

Residents of countries other than the United States made 356,000 overnight trips to Canada, down 0.2% from March, mainly as a result of a decline in travel by residents of smaller overseas markets.

Meanwhile, overnight travel from 8 of the top 12 overseas markets to Canada increased in April.

Canadian residents took 4.5 million trips outside the country in April, up 2.3% from March. Of these, 3.8 million were trips to the United States, up 2.1%.

Same-day car travel by Canadian residents to the United States increased 1.8% in April compared with March. Overnight car travel to the United States rose 2.0%, while overnight travel by plane increased 3.7%.

Travel to overseas countries by Canadian residents increased 3.3% to 716,000 trips.
