The Farm Input Price Index rose 0.8% in the third quarter, matching the increase observed in the second quarter.

Animal production (+3.7%) contributed the most to the quarterly movement of the index. The advance of the index was tempered by a decrease in crop production (-1.7%).

The index increased in eight provinces during the third quarter. Ontario (+1.9%) and Quebec (+2.5%) contributed the most to the national growth. These increases were partially offset by decreases in Saskatchewan (-1.1%) and New Brunswick (-0.1%). Ontario's price increase was led by prepared commercial feed costs (+17.2%). Higher prices in Saskatchewan were dampened by the falling costs of fertilizers (-5.3%).

Nationally, farm input prices increased 5.8% between the third quarter of 2011 and the third quarter of 2012.

Animal production (+10.0%) costs contributed the most to the annual price movement of the index. Animal production has been the main contributor to the annual growth of the index since the third quarter of 2010.

The index increased in all provinces between the third quarter of 2011 and the third quarter of 2012. Ontario (+7.0%) and Alberta (+6.4%) contributed the most to the annual advance of the index. Higher annual animal production costs were primarily the result of prepared commercial feed costs rising in both Ontario (+24.3%) and in Alberta (+20.4%) since the third quarter of 2011.
