The two largest industries continued to trend upwards, reporting increased sales in July. Higher sales in the full-service restaurant industry (+2.0%) accounted for most of the gain, while the limited-service restaurant industry rose 0.3%.

Sales in the drinking places industry were down 1.7%. The special food services industry group, which includes food service contractors, caterers and mobile food services, posted a 0.4% decline, following three consecutive monthly gains.

Sales up in eight provinces

Ontario (+1.4%) accounted for more than half of the national gain, led by increases in both the limited-service and full-service restaurant industries. Higher sales in Ontario coincided with the Pan-American games.

Restaurant sales increased 0.9% in Quebec, offsetting the decline in June. The gain in July was due to higher sales in the full-service restaurant industry.

Sales rose 3.6% in Saskatchewan, following a decline in the previous month.

Receipts were up in Nova Scotia (+2.4%), New Brunswick (+0.6%) and Newfoundland and Labrador (+1.5%) on the strength of both the full-service and limited-service restaurant industries.

Alberta reported a 0.5% decrease in July, partly as a result of lower sales in the full-service restaurant industry. Sales in this province have been on a downward trend since the beginning of 2015.

Sales decreased 2.1% in Prince Edward Island, the second monthly decline since February 2015.
