Spectator sports, event promoters, artists and related industries, 2013

Total operating revenue for promoters (presenters) of performing arts, sports and similar events, spectator sports, independent artists, writers and performers and for agents and managers for artists, athletes, entertainers and other public figures was $7.7 billion in 2013 with total operating expenses of $6.9 billion.

Promoters (presenters) of performing arts, sports and similar events accounted for the largest share of the total operating revenue (41.9%) of these four industry groups in 2013. Spectator sports, which were affected by the National Hockey League player lockout, had the second largest share (32.4%), followed by independent artists, writers and performers (20.4%). Agents and managers for artists, athletes, entertainers, and other public figures accounted for the final 5.3%.

Promoters (presenters) of performing arts, sports and similar events

Total operating revenue for the promoters (presenters) of performing arts, sports and similar events was marginally higher than total operating expenses of $3.2 billion in 2013, resulting in an operating profit margin of 2.3%. Salaries, wages, commissions and benefits were $666.2 million. Businesses in this industry include live theatres, sports stadiums, performing arts promoters, festivals, sports promoters and other presenters with and without facilities.

The 2015 Pan American games was hosted in Toronto, Ontario. Activities and preparation for the games affected this industry group in 2013.

Spectator sports

Composed of sports teams playing for a paying audience, horse race tracks, racing events and independent athletes, the spectator sports industry group posted total operating revenue of $2.5 billion and total operating expenses of $2.4 billion in 2013, resulting in an operating profit margin of 4.0%. Salaries, wages, commissions and benefits reached $1.1 billion, representing close to 45% of total operating expenses.

Although the National Hockey League player lock-out occurred between September of 2012 and January 2013, the financial impact of the lockout on this industry was mainly felt in 2013.

Independent artists, writers and performers

Total operating revenue of independent artists, writers and performers was $1.6 billion in 2013, while total operating expenses were $977.6 million, resulting in an operating profit margin of 37.8%. Salaries, wages, commissions and benefits totalled $188.7 million.

Agents and managers for artists, athletes, entertainers, and other public figures

Agents and managers for artists, athletes, entertainers and other public figures was the smallest industry with total operating revenue of $404.0 million and total operating expenses of $334.0 million in 2013, resulting in an operating profit margin of 17.3%. Salaries, wages, commissions and benefits was the largest expense item, accounting for 34.2% of total operating expenses.

Changes in methodology were made to the Annual Survey of Service Industries: Spectator Sports, Event Promoters, Artists and Related Industries. Users should, therefore, exercise caution when comparing 2013 data with historical datasets. Beginning with this release, the estimates are based on the 2012 North American Industrial Classification System.

The publication Spectator Sports, Event Promoters, Artists and Related Industries (Catalogue number63-246-X) is no longer available. Data from the Annual Survey of Service Industries: Spectator Sports, Event Promoters, Artists and Related Industries will now be released in CANSIM.
