Lower sales in the full-service restaurant industry (-0.8%) accounted for the largest decline in dollar terms, following gains the two previous months. The special food services industry group, which includes food service contractors, caterers and mobile food services, posted a 0.7% decrease after reporting five consecutive monthly gains.

Sales in the limited-service restaurant industry rose 0.8%, the third consecutive monthly gain. Receipts in the drinking places industry rose for a second consecutive month, up 0.5% in September.

Sales down in five provinces

Sales were down in five provinces in September. Weaker sales in the full-service and limited-service restaurant industries contributed to the declines in Ontario (-0.4%) and Alberta (-0.7%).

Sales in both Nova Scotia (-1.3%) and Saskatchewan (-0.2%) decreased for the second month in a row.

Sales rose 0.6% in British Columbia, the fourth consecutive monthly gain. Receipts increased for the third month in a row in Quebec (+0.4%).

Sales in Newfoundland and Labrador rose 2.7%, more than offsetting the decline in August. Receipts in Prince Edward Island were up 2.7%, coinciding with increased tourist activity.
