Financial highlights

Canadian oil pipeline companies reported total operating revenues of $5.3 billion in 2014, up 10.7% from 2013, while total operating expenses rose 3.7% to $2.4 billion. As a result, total net income after taxes increased by 13.8% to $1.7 billion.

Total assets rose 10.8% from a year earlier to $45.6 billion. The majority of this gain was attributable to a $6.4 billion increase in transportation plant assets, while a $1.2 billion decline in total investments partially offset the overall increase.

In 2014, a $2.9 billion increase in total current liabilities was the main contributor to the overall changes in total liabilities, capital stock and surplus of $4.4 billion compared with 2013. The changing pattern in financing mechanism over the previous two years followed the general trend of the industry.

Employment and wages up

The total number of employees at Canadian oil pipeline companies increased 7.2% from 2013 to 4,401 in 2014. Over the same period, total salaries and wages paid rose 11.9% to $589.5 million. Salary and wages increased across all categories in 2014, led by professional personnel (+7.3%), management (+5.8%), wage earners (+5.0%) and technical and administrative personnel (+1.0%).

Pipeline distances increase

There were 47,182 kilometres of oil pipelines operating in Canada in 2014, up 2.4% from a year earlier. This increase was mostly attributable to gathering lines (+1,236 kilometres) and parallel lines (+79 kilometres).
