Expenses outpace revenues

Canadian natural gas transport and distribution companies reported total operating revenues of $17.5 billion in 2014, up 9.4% from 2013, while total operating expenses rose 12.8% to $14.2 billion. As a result, net revenue from operations decreased 3.3% to $3.3 billion. As well, net income after taxes declined 59.9% to $978.9 million, mainly because of income deductions.

Assets and liabilities increase

Total assets of natural gas transport and distribution companies rose 5.0% from a year earlier to $97.1 billion in 2014, driven mainly by a 3.0% increase in fixed assets to $45.0 billion. Total investments, current assets and deferred assets also increased.

Total liabilities and shareholders' equity was up 5.0% from 2013 to $97.1 billion, led by a 25.9% gain in total current liabilities. Deferred credit, appropriations and total long-term debt also increased. A slight decrease in total shareholder's equity offset the overall gain.

Salaries and wages rise

Canadian natural gas transport and distribution companies reported 15,051 employees in 2014, up 0.1% from the previous year. Meanwhile, salaries and wages increased 5.8% to $1.4 billion. Wage earners made up 70.8% of the workforce, while management accounted for the remaining 29.2%.

Pipeline distances edge up

Total distances of Canadian natural gas transport and distribution pipelines edged up 0.7% to 348,611 kilometres in 2014. The majority of the pipelines were distribution lines (260,838 kilometres), followed by transmission lines (82,504 kilometres) and gathering lines (5,269 kilometres). More than three-quarters (77.2%) of Canadian natural gas pipelines were located in Ontario, Alberta and Saskatchewan.
