The number of head office employees in Canada increased 1.0% in 2014 to 227,684, while the number of head offices declined 0.6% to 2,756.

Growth in head office employment continued to be concentrated, with 94.0% of new head office employment in 2014 coming from five provinces: Alberta (25.5%), Ontario (24.7%), Manitoba (18.2%), British Columbia (15.5%), and Quebec (10.2%).

Provincially, Ontario accounted for the largest number of head offices (1,084) and employees (94,549). This was followed by Quebec, with 568 head offices and 52,072 employees, and Alberta, with 395 head offices and 41,412 employees.

Head offices continued to be mainly located in large urban centres, with more than two-thirds of head offices and 84.0% of head office employment located in eight census metropolitan areas (CMAs): Toronto, Montréal, Calgary, Vancouver, Ottawa–Gatineau, Winnipeg, Québec and Edmonton.

Of the eight CMAs, Toronto had the largest number of head offices with 696. This was followed by Montréal (386), Vancouver (240) and Calgary (215).

Toronto (74,603) had the most head office employees among the CMAs, followed by Montréal (41,276), Calgary (32,257) and Vancouver (15,225).

Head offices include establishments and locations primarily engaged in providing general management and/or administrative support services to affiliated establishments. Their activities include corporate functions, such as strategic organizational planning, communications, tax planning, legal services, marketing, finance, human resource management and information technology services.

Data for 2012 have been revised.
