Air fares—domestic and international combined—averaged $233.90 in the second quarter, down 1.8% from the same quarter of 2014. This was the lowest level since the fourth quarter of 2009, when air fares averaged $229.20.

The average domestic fare was $173.90, down 4.8% from the same quarter a year earlier, while the average international fare fell 1.3% to $303.40.

Average domestic fares were down in 9 of the 10 selected Canadian cities of enplanement, with 3 western cities posting the largest declines. Edmonton (-5.9%) and Calgary (-5.3%) registered the largest decreases, as demand for air travel weakened in tandem with the economic slowdown in Alberta. Saskatoon followed, with average domestic fares down 4.7%. Halifax (+1.8%) was the lone city to report an increase.

Toronto ($197.40) remained the city with the highest average domestic air fare, followed by Vancouver ($194.80) and Winnipeg ($180.80). These three cities had average domestic fares above the national average. Meanwhile, Saskatoon ($157.00) posted the lowest average domestic air fare.

  Note to readers

Average air fares are calculated for each flight stage. When the passenger boards the aircraft at one airport and departs the aircraft at another airport, this is considered a flight stage. Average air fares are base fares and they do not include the Goods and Services Tax, air transportation taxes or user fees such as airport improvement fees or fuel surcharges.

The Fare Basis Survey covers Air Canada (including Air Canada rouge), Jazz, Air Canada's Canadian regional code-share partners, Air Transat and WestJet.

The data in this quarterly release are not seasonally adjusted.
