The value of employer-sponsored trusteed pension fund assets was $1.5 trillion in 2014, up 27.4% from $1.2 trillion in 2012. This compares with a 14.8% growth rate over the 2010 to 2012 period.

The number of trusteed pension funds in Canada totalled 8,876 in 2014, virtually unchanged from 2012.

The value of public sector pension fund assets grew 28.1% over the two-year period, reaching $1.1 trillion. Private sector pension funds increased 25.8% over the same period to $480 billion.

Revenues totalled $170.4 billion in 2014, up 32.3% from 2012. Employer and employee contributions decreased 1.5%. Investment income grew 21.6% over the two-year period, while profits on the sale of securities virtually doubled from $30.1 billion to $60.1 billion.

Pension fund expenditures rose 14.5% to $70.5 billion in 2014, mainly because of a 13.1% increase in pension benefit payments. Administration costs grew 42.8% to $6.0 billion.

In total, there are 5.4 million Canadian workers who are members of pension plans with assets managed by trusteed funds. Of this group, 3.1 million workers are members of pension plans in the public sector. The remaining 2.3 million workers are members of pension plans in the private sector.
