Refinery receipts decrease

Canadian refineries received 7.8 million cubic metres of crude oil in December, down 12.5% from the same month in 2014.

Over the same period, refinery receipts of domestic crude oil decreased 11.3% to 5.6 million cubic metres.

Crude oil imports declined 15.4% to 2.2 million cubic metres in December and accounted for 27.9% of total crude oil received at refineries in Canada.

Crude oil held at refineries rose 6.8% to 3.8 million cubic metres.

Lower refined petroleum production, imports and exports

Refinery production of refined petroleum products decreased 0.7% from December 2014 to 9.3 million cubic metres in December 2015.

Canada imported 1.1 million cubic metres of refined petroleum products in December, down 20.2% compared with the same month a year earlier.

Exports of refined petroleum products declined 32.1% from December 2014 to 2.0 million cubic metres in December 2015.

Inventories and sales down

Inventories held at refineries in December decreased 12.3% from the same month a year earlier to 8.3 million cubic metres.

Domestic sales of refined petroleum products totalled 8.5 million cubic metres in December, down 5.5% from the same month in 2014.

Year 2015 annual review

Refinery production decreased 0.4% from 2014 to 108.3 million cubic metres in 2015.

While net production of motor gasoline increased 8.3% to 41.9 million cubic metres in 2015, net production of diesel fuel oil declined 4.5% to 28.7 million cubic metres.

In 2015, domestic sales of refined petroleum products fell 3.2% to 104.4 million cubic metres. Domestic sales of motor gasoline decreased 1.8% to 44.7 million cubic metres.

Imports of refined petroleum products increased 3.4% to 13.9 million cubic metres. Exports rose 3.2% to 27.8 million cubic metres.

The Monthly Refined Petroleum Products survey collects data on the activities of every Canadian refinery involved in the production of refined petroleum products (North American Industry Classification System [NAICS] 324000) and of selected major distributors of these products (NAICS 412000).

Domestic sales include all sales by reporting companies, excluding exports and sales to other reporting companies.

Refinery receipts of crude oil and equivalent hydrocarbons (condensates and pentanes plus) from domestic and foreign sources are for refinery consumption or storage.
