Operating revenue for the accommodation services subsector reached $19.1 billion in 2014, up 5.7% from 2013.

Operating expenses grew 4.1% to $16.6 billion, resulting in an operating profit margin of 13.1%, compared with 11.8% in 2013. Salaries, wages, commissions and benefits remained the largest expense item, accounting for 32.0% of operating expenses.

The accommodation services subsector is made up of two industry groups: the hotels, motor hotels and motels industry group and the other accommodation industry group.

Hotels, motor hotels and motels

Operating revenue for the hotels, motor hotels and motels group increased 4.4% to $14.9 billion in 2014. This group accounted for 78.1% of operating revenue for the entire accommodation services subsector.

British Columbia (+9.2%) posted the largest increase in operating revenue.

Operating expenses for this group grew 2.3% to $13.0 billion in 2014. The operating profit margin increased from 11.1% in 2013 to 12.9% in 2014.

Other accommodation industries

The other accommodation industries group, which includes recreational vehicle parks and campgrounds, bed and breakfast homes, cottages and cabins, and rooming and boarding houses, accounted for the remaining 21.9% of operating revenue for the accommodation services subsector.

Operating revenue for this group increased 10.5% to $4.2 billion in 2014, while operating expenses rose 11.4% to $3.6 billion, resulting in an operating profit margin decline from 14.6% in 2013 to 13.9% in 2014.

Alberta (43.6%) accounted for the largest share of this group's total operating revenue, followed by Ontario (19.4%).
