The Farm Input Price Index decreased 1.5% in the fourth quarter. The decline was mainly attributable to animal production (-6.3%).

Machinery and motor vehicles (-0.1%) also recorded a decrease.

Crop production (+1.8%) and general business costs (+1.2%) recorded price increases, while the buildings component was unchanged.

The index decreased in five provinces. Alberta (-3.6%) contributed the most to the national decline, followed by Quebec (-2.0%) and Ontario (-0.8%).

Year over year, farm input prices rose 0.1% at the national level. The increase was mainly attributable to crop production (+2.2%) and general business costs (+3.3%).

Year over year, the index was up in six provinces in the fourth quarter. Ontario (+1.6%) contributed the most to the year-over-year increase.
