Air fares, domestic and international combined, averaged $248.70 in the third quarter, down 1.7% from the same quarter in 2014. This marked the second consecutive year-over-year quarterly decline.

The average domestic fare was $175.70, down 6.3% from the same quarter a year earlier, while the average international fare edged up 0.2% to $341.20.

Average domestic fares fell in all selected Canadian cities of enplanement, with four western cities posting the largest declines. Regina (-9.4%), Calgary (-7.6%) and Saskatoon (-7.3%) registered the largest decreases, as demand for air travel weakened in tandem with the economic slowdown in Alberta and Saskatchewan. Winnipeg followed, with average domestic fares down 6.3%.

As in the third quarter of 2014, Vancouver ($199.90) edged out Toronto ($196.60) as the city with the highest average domestic air fare in the third quarter of 2015. These two cities, as well as Halifax ($176.20), were the only cities to record average domestic fares above the national average. Meanwhile, the average domestic fare in Winnipeg ($175.70) was at par with the national level.

  Note to readers

Average air fares are calculated for each flight stage. When the passenger boards the aircraft at one airport and departs the aircraft at another airport, this is considered a flight stage. Average air fares are base fares and do not include the Goods and Services Tax, air transportation taxes or user fees, such as airport improvement fees or fuel surcharges.

The Fare Basis Survey covers Air Canada (including Air Canada rouge), Jazz, Air Canada's Canadian regional code-share partners, Air Transat and WestJet.

The data in this quarterly release are not seasonally adjusted.
