The number of vehicles registered in Canada reached 33.2 million in 2015, up 1.9% from the previous year.
Registrations of light road motor vehicles (less than 4 500 kilograms), which include the vast majority of car models, sport utility vehicles, pickup trucks and vans driven by individuals on the road, accounted for almost two-thirds of registered vehicles, or just over 22 million vehicles.
Ontario had the largest number of light road motor vehicle registrations with 7.9 million vehicles, or 36% of all registered vehicles of this type. However, Ontario (0.69) had one of the lowest ratios of light road motor vehicles in relation to the driving-age population. In comparison, Yukon had a ratio of 1.04 vehicles per person aged 16 and older, while this ratio was 0.91 in Alberta.
Trailer registrations ranked second for total registrations in the country, with 7.1 million vehicles. Once again, Ontario had the most registrations of this vehicle type.
This was followed by registrations of off-road, construction and farm vehicles, at 2.2 million vehicles, and medium-duty truck (between 4 500 kilograms and 14 999 kilograms) registrations, at 592,000 vehicles. Quebec had the most off-road, construction and farm vehicles, while Alberta reported the largest number of medium-duty trucks.
