In the first quarter, the Farm Input Price Index decreased 2.1% from the previous quarter. The decline was mainly attributable to animal production (-2.8%), more specifically, cattle (-6.4%).

Machinery and motor vehicles (-4.1%) and crop production (-2.8%) also contributed to the drop.

In contrast, general business costs (+1.3%) partly offset the decrease.

The index fell in all provinces. Alberta (-3.3%) contributed the most to the national decline, followed by Saskatchewan (-3.1%) and Ontario (-1.2%).

Year over year, farm input prices were down 1.8% at the national level in the first quarter, mainly due to animal production (-4.5%).

Compared with the first quarter of 2015, the index was down in six provinces. Alberta (-3.6%) contributed the most to the year-over-year decrease.

  Note to readers

The Farm Input Price Index is subject to an eight-quarter revision period after dissemination of a given quarter's data. In addition to the revisions, data on general business costs and total farm input were revised back to the fourth quarter of 2013.

The Farm Input Price Index is an indicator of the change in input costs faced by Canadian farmers. The index is not seasonally adjusted.

The index is available for 13 geographic areas: each of the 10 provinces, eastern Canada (Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec and Ontario), western Canada (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia), and Canada total (excluding the territories).
