Natural gas transmission pipelines received 520.1 million gigajoules of natural gas from fields, gathering systems and gas plants in July.
Natural gas transmission and distribution systems delivered 183.7 million gigajoules to industrial consumers, 16.4 million gigajoules to commercial and institutional consumers and 15.8 million gigajoules to residential consumers.
Provincial deliveries
In Alberta, deliveries of natural gas totalled 124.5 million gigajoules in July. The industrial sector received 94.1% of these deliveries.
In Ontario, 45.4 million gigajoules of natural gas was delivered to consumers. The industrial sector received 68.3% of these deliveries, the residential sector 17.3% and the commercial and institutional sector 14.4%.
Opening and closing inventories
In July, opening inventories of natural gas stored in Canadian facilities totalled 854.9 million gigajoules. Inventories increased 4.0% in the month to close at 888.8 million gigajoules, in preparation for consumption during colder weather.
Closing inventories in Western Canada increased 2.4% to 611.4 million gigajoules, while closing inventories in Central Canada rose 7.6% to 277.4 million gigajoules.
Exports and imports
Canada exported 281.5 million gigajoules of natural gas by pipeline to the United States in July. Imports of natural gas from the United States totalled 54.2 million gigajoules.

Data from March to June 2016 in CANSIM tables 129-0005, 129-0006 and 129-0007 have been revised.
Data for 2015 in CANSIM tables 129-0002 and 129-0003 have been revised.
Statistics for pipeline fuel are now available back to January 2016. Pipeline fuel is used to power compressors to move gas through pipelines.
As part of Statistics Canada's Integrated Business Statistics Program, changes were made to the Monthly Natural Gas Transmission Survey and Monthly Natural Gas Distribution Survey to provide more detailed industry data. In addition, the Monthly Natural Gas Storage Survey now provides measures on gas storage characteristics related to inventories and flows.
With these changes, storage data will be published in CANSIM table 129-0005, transmission data in CANSIM table 129-0006 and distribution data in CANSIM table 129-0007. Data in CANSIM tables 129-0001, 129-0002, 129-0003 and 129-0004 will remain available for reference purposes.
Definitions
Data on natural gas no longer correspond to marketable natural gas but represent natural gas from fields, gas-gathering systems and gas plants.
Natural gas deliveries (termed "sales" in previous releases) include deliveries to industrial, commercial and institutional, and residential consumers.
Opening inventories correspond to inventories as of the first day of the reference month, while closing inventories correspond to inventories as of the last day of the reference month. For example, the reference period for the opening inventory in January was January 1, while the reference period for the closing inventory was January 31.
