Demographic estimates for Canada, the provinces and the territories for the second quarter are now available. Revised estimates back to the third quarter of 2011 are also available.

According to preliminary estimates, Canada's population was 36,286,425 on July 1, 2016, up 139,645 from April 1, 2016. In absolute numbers, such an increase had not been recorded since the third quarter of 1988 (+140,908). This population growth was mainly attributable to the number of immigrants (86,106) who arrived in the country during the second quarter.

  Note to readers

Estimates released today are based on 2011 Census counts adjusted for census net undercoverage and incompletely enumerated Indian reserves, to which is added the estimated demographic growth for the period from May 10, 2011 to June 30, 2016.

These estimates are not to be confused with the 2016 Census population counts to be released on February 8, 2017.
