The Farm Input Price Index decreased 0.9% in the second quarter. The decline was mainly attributable to animal production (-4.6%), more specifically cattle production (-13.9%).

Crop production (-0.7%) and general business costs (-0.3%) also contributed to the decline.

Machinery and motor vehicles (+3.4%) partly offset the decrease, mainly as a result of higher prices for machinery fuel (+17.9%).

The index fell in five provinces. Alberta (-3.2%) contributed the most to the national decline, followed by Ontario (-1.5%).

Year over year, farm input prices declined 4.1% nationally. The decrease was mainly attributable to animal production (-11.6%).

Compared with the second quarter of 2015, the index was down in six provinces. Alberta (-8.7%) contributed the most to the year-over-year decrease.
