Refinery receipts increase

Canadian refineries received 8.8 million cubic metres of crude oil in July, up 1.6% from the same month in 2015. The year-over-year increase in July was the first since the Alberta wildfire in May.

In July, refinery receipts of domestic crude oil fell 6.9% compared with July 2015 to 5.2 million cubic metres.

Crude oil imports increased 17.5% from July 2015 to 3.5 million cubic metres. Imports represented 40.1% of total crude oil received at refineries in Canada in July.

Crude oil inventories held at refineries totalled 3.8 million cubic metres in July, down 5.5% compared with the same month the previous year.

Refineries increase their use of non-conventional crude oil

In July, the total volume of crude oil and equivalent products used in refinery production increased 3.1% from the same month a year earlier to 8.7 million cubic metres.

Conventional light crude oil used in refinery production was down 12.1% compared with July 2015. The three other types of crude oil used in production increased in July: synthetic crude oil (+35.3%), crude bitumen (+77.7%) and conventional heavy crude oil (+20.1%).

Refinery production and sales up

Year over year, refinery production increased 8.6% to 10.0 million cubic metres in July.

In July, domestic sales of refined petroleum products increased 1.2% compared with July 2015 to 9.3 million cubic metres. Sales of motor gasoline rose 4.8%, while diesel sales decreased 6.3%

Imports and exports up

Canada imported 1.5 million cubic metres of refined petroleum products in July, up 45.1% from the same month in 2015.

Exports of refined petroleum products increased 2.2% to 2.3 million cubic metres in July.

Inventories increase

Closing inventories of refined petroleum products held at refineries increased 8.4% year over year to 7.6 million cubic metres in July.

The Monthly Refined Petroleum Products survey collects data on the activities of every Canadian refinery involved in the production of refined petroleum products (North American Industry Classification System [NAICS] 324000) and of selected major distributors of these products (NAICS 412000).

Domestic sales include all sales by reporting companies, excluding exports and sales to other reporting companies.

Refinery receipts of crude oil and equivalent hydrocarbons (condensates and pentanes plus) from domestic and foreign sources are for refinery consumption or storage.

Data from January 2014 to June 2016 have been revised.
