Travel between Canada and other countries, August 2016

Travel by Canadian residents to overseas countries increased 3.7% from July to 1.0 million trips in August.

Canadian residents made 3.5 million trips to the United States in August, up 0.9% compared with the previous month.

Residents of overseas countries made 537,000 trips to Canada in August, compared with 539,000 trips in July. The July and August figures respectively represented the highest and second-highest numbers of trips made by residents of overseas countries to Canada since recordkeeping began in 1972.

United States residents made 2.0 million trips to Canada in August, down 2.9% from July.

Overseas countries refer to countries other than the United States.

A Canadian resident traveller is a Canadian resident who has travelled outside of Canada for a period of less than 12 months.

A non-resident traveller is a resident of a country other than Canada who is travelling to Canada for a period of less than 12 months.
