Secondary distributors in Canada sold 26.0 billion litres of refined petroleum products in 2015, down 1.4% from 2014.

Diesel fuel oil (48.2%) and motor gasoline (40.6%) accounted for most sales, with light (7.1%) and heavy (4.1%) fuel oils representing the rest.

Motor gasoline sales increase

Secondary distributors of petroleum products sold 10.6 billion litres of motor gasoline in 2015, up 1.3% from the previous year. Gasoline stations received most of the distributed volumes at 9.5 billion litres, up 2.1% from 2014. Distribution to the agriculture industry decreased 14.1% to 458.2 million litres.

Diesel fuel oil sales decline

In 2015, secondary distribution of diesel fuel oil fell 1.0% compared with 2014 to 12.5 billion litres. The decline was mostly attributable to gasoline stations, where sales fell 5.3% to 4.7 billion litres. The agriculture (-4.2%), oil and natural gas (-10.5%), and construction (-1.5%) industries also recorded decreases.

The volume of diesel fuel oil distributed to the road transportation industry rose 15.7% in 2015 compared with 2014, partially offsetting the overall decrease.

Sales of light and heavy fuel oil decrease

Light fuel oil (heating oil) distribution decreased 3.7% from the previous year to 1.8 billion litres in 2015. Residential consumers received almost three-quarters of the distributed volumes, down 5.0% to 1.4 billion litres. Meanwhile, volumes distributed to other commercial and institutional customers, such as schools, universities, hospitals and retail trade customers, were up 7.5% from the previous year.

Secondary distribution of heavy fuel oil fell 23.0% to 1.1 billion litres in 2015.

  Note to readers

The Annual Survey of Secondary Distributors of Refined Petroleum Products collects sales data for four fuel types: diesel fuel oil, motor gasoline, light fuel oil (heating oil) and heavy fuel oil.

Secondary distributors of refined petroleum products are commercial entities that act as buyers and resellers between the supplier and end user of refined petroleum products.

The agriculture industry includes farmers, hunters and trappers.

Other commercial and institutional customers include companies that are primarily engaged in activities such as educational services, health care and social assistance, financial services, and retail and wholesale trade.
