Natural gas transmission pipelines received 533.6 million gigajoules of natural gas from fields, gathering systems and gas plants in August. Of the seven provinces that recorded receipts, Alberta (71.8%) and British Columbia (24.9%) received the majority.

Natural gas transmission and distributions systems delivered 180.1 million gigajoules to industrial consumers, 15.7 million gigajoules to commercial and institutional consumers, and 14.7 million gigajoules to residential consumers.

Provincial deliveries

In Alberta, deliveries of natural gas totalled 116.2 million gigajoules in August. The industrial sector received 94.4% of these deliveries, accounting for over half of the natural gas consumed in Canada.

In Ontario, 49.7 million gigajoules of natural gas was delivered to consumers. The industrial sector received 70.6% of these deliveries, the residential sector 15.4%, and the commercial and institutional sector 14.0%.

Opening and closing inventories

In August, opening inventories of natural gas stored in Canadian facilities totalled 888.8 million gigajoules. In preparation for the heating season, inventories increased 4.4% in the month to close at 927.9 million gigajoules.

Closing inventories in western Canada increased 3.3% to 631.3 million gigajoules, while closing inventories in central Canada rose 6.9% to 296.5 million gigajoules.

Exports and imports

Canada exported 278.2 million gigajoules of natural gas by pipeline to the United States in August. Imports of natural gas from the United States totalled 58.7 million gigajoules.

  Note to readers

Data from January to July 2016 (CANSIM table 129-0007) were revised.

Changes were made to the Monthly Natural Gas Transmission Survey and Monthly Natural Gas Distribution Survey to provide more detailed industry data. In addition, the Monthly Natural Gas Storage Survey now provides measures on gas storage characteristics related to inventories and flows.

With these changes, storage data will be published in CANSIM table 129-0005, transmission data in CANSIM table 129-0006 and distribution data in CANSIM table 129-0007. Data in CANSIM tables 129-0001, 129-0002, 129-0003 and 129-0004 will remain available for reference purposes.

Definitions

Data on natural gas no longer correspond to marketable natural gas but represent natural gas from fields, gas-gathering systems and gas plants.

Natural gas deliveries (termed "sales" in previous releases) include deliveries to industrial, commercial and institutional, and residential consumers.

Opening inventories correspond to inventories as of the first day of the reference month, while closing inventories correspond to inventories as of the last day of the reference month. For example, the reference period for the opening inventory in January was January 1, while the reference period for the closing inventory was January 31.

Pipeline fuel is used to power compressors to move gas through pipelines.
