New data on risk factors for heart disease from the rapid response component of the Canadian Community Health Survey – Annual Component are now available for custom requests.

  Note to readers

The data were collected from every province between July and December 2015.

This module deals with various aspects surrounding heart health. It asks questions about factors that may be linked to heart health such as eating habits. It also asks questions around preventative measures taken before (primary measures) or after (secondary measures) any heart issues like a heart attack or stroke. These can include anything from taking aspirin on a daily basis, to receiving blood tests, to lifestyle changes recommended by a physician. Questions about specific heart tests or procedures undergone by the respondent, as well as family history of heart attacks are also asked.

These questions will be used to reproduce a heart risk score to help investigate cardiac risk factors across the country. They will also be used to distinguish between primary and secondary preventative measures, as risk factor screening is most relevant for primary preventative measures.

The addition of these questions to the Canadian Community Health Survey was sponsored by the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences.
