Revenue from logging activities

$9.4 billion

2015

2.4%

(annual change)

Revenue from activities for the logging industries totalled $9.4 billion in 2015, a 2.4% increase from 2014. The two types of logging activities, logging (except contract) and contract logging, accounted for $4.7 billion each.

Total salaries and wages increased by 4.8% in 2015. Total salaries and wages amounted to $0.5 billion in the logging (except contract) industry and $1.1 billion for contract loggers. Total salaries and wages therefore represented a larger proportion of total expenses for contract loggers (23%) than for loggers (9%).

The cost of materials and supplies decreased by 0.8% in 2015 to $4.8 billion. The cost of materials and supplies accounted for 37% of total expenses for contract loggers, while they represented 58% for loggers.

Together, the revenue from all logging activities in British Columbia ($4.6 billion), Quebec ($1.9 billion), Ontario ($1.0 billion), Alberta ($0.9 billion) and New Brunswick ($0.6 billion) made up 96% of the Canadian logging sector. While revenue from logging activities increased in most provinces, the largest increases were registered in Ontario (up $110 million or 12.0%), Quebec (up $105 million or 5.7%), Alberta (up $86 million or 10.1%) and New Brunswick (up $61 million or 12.1%). Decreases were posted in British Columbia (down $162 million or 3.4%) and Manitoba (down $3.1 million or 5.2%).

Contract loggers accounted for close to three-quarters (74%) of the revenue from logging activities in Alberta, compared with less than half in British Columbia (48%), Quebec (45%), Ontario (44%) and New Brunswick (39%).
