Advertising and related services, 2015
The advertising and related services industry generated $9.2 billion in operating revenue in 2015, up 4.7% from 2014. Operating expenses rose 4.2% to $7.9 billion in 2015, resulting in an operating profit margin of 13.4%, up slightly from 13.0% in 2014.
Salaries, wages, commissions, and benefits increased 3.9% to $3.4 billion in 2015 and remained the largest expense for firms in this industry at 42.9%. Cost of goods sold was the second largest expense at 15.1%.
Firms in Ontario (60.0%) continued to generate the largest share of the industry operating revenues in 2015, followed by Quebec (19.8%), British Columbia (9.2%) and Alberta (7.0%). Provincial and territorial shares of industry revenue were relatively stable compared with previous years.
Strong growth in Ontario (+6.8%), British Columbia (+5.1%), and Nova Scotia (+10.8%) accounted for 97.4% of the increase in national operating revenue. By contrast, Quebec (+0.1%) and Alberta (+2.3%) posted operating revenue growth rates below the national average.
Sales to Canadian businesses accounted for the largest share (80.7%) of the client base for this industry group, followed by sales to clients outside of Canada (10.3%), and sales to governments, not-for-profit organizations and public institutions (7.2%).
