Telling Canada's story in numbers; #ByTheNumbers

In celebration of the country's 150th birthday, Statistics Canada is presenting snapshots from our rich statistical history.

The shopping mall is a long-standing element of Canada's retailing landscape. It is defined as one or more buildings that form a complex of stores and businesses facing a system of enclosed walkways for pedestrians. The first mall in Canada, the Toronto Arcade, was located at 137 Yonge Street in Toronto and opened its doors to the public in 1884. It offered 52 retail spaces, as well as offices and artists' studios over its three floors. Today, Canada lays claim to the largest mall in North America. The West Edmonton Mall in Edmonton, Alberta opened in 1981 and is home to more than 800 stores and services including over 100 dining venues, two hotels, as well as nine attractions such as amusement and water parks, an ice rink and an aquarium.

  Note to readers

The Commercial Rents Services Price Index (CRSPI) is a monthly index disseminated on a quarterly basis. Prices collected are average rents measured in price per square foot for a sample of commercial buildings.

With each release, data for the previous quarter may have been revised. The series is also subject to an annual revision with the release of second-quarter data of the following reference year.

The CRSPI is not seasonally adjusted and is available at the Canada level only.
