The Farm Input Price Index increased 1.3% in the first quarter.

The growth was largely attributable to higher prices for animal production (+2.8%), more specifically livestock purchases (+5.2%).

Machinery and motor vehicles (+2.0%), crop production (+0.4%) and buildings (+0.3%) also contributed to the increase of the index, while general business costs were down 0.5%.

The index rose in six provinces. Saskatchewan (+1.8%) and Alberta (+1.3%) contributed the most to the national increase.

Year over year, farm input prices declined 1.4% at the Canada level, as a result of lower prices for animal production (-6.4%).

Compared with the first quarter of 2016, the index was down in seven provinces, with Alberta (-5.6%) contributing the most to the year-over-year decline.

  Note to readers

The Farm Input Price Index is an indicator of the change in input costs faced by Canadian farmers. The indexes are not seasonally adjusted.

The indexes are available for 13 geographic areas: each of the 10 provinces, Eastern Canada (Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec and Ontario), Western Canada (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia), and Canada total (excluding the territories).

The Farm Input Price Index is subject to an eight-quarter revision period after dissemination of a given quarter's data.
