Canadian refineries received 8.7 million cubic metres of crude oil in May, up 31.8% from the same month in 2016. In May 2016, the Fort McMurray wildfires had led to the lowest level of crude oil production in Canada since June 2011.

Refinery receipts of crude oil and equivalent products
Domestic crude oil receipts rebounded in May, up 63.3% from the same month in 2016 to 5.2 million cubic metres. Last year's wildfires in northern Alberta had led to the lowest domestic crude oil receipts level since April 1973.
Crude oil imports increased 1.6% from May 2016 to 3.4 million cubic metres. Imports represented 39.4% of total crude oil received at refineries in Canada.
Crude oil inventories held at refineries totalled 3.9 million cubic metres in May, down 2.8% from the same month in 2016.
Refinery production and sales up
Refinery production increased 19.2% from May 2016 to 9.8 million cubic metres.
Domestic sales of refined petroleum products rose 3.1% to 9.2 million cubic metres. Sales of motor gasoline (+3.0%) and diesel fuel oil (+2.7%) were both up in May compared with the same month in 2016.

Inventories increase
Closing inventories of refined petroleum products held at refineries increased 11.0% year over year, to 7.4 million cubic metres in May.

The Monthly Refined Petroleum Products survey collects data on the activities of every Canadian refinery involved in the production of refined petroleum products (North American Industry Classification System [NAICS] 324000) and of selected major distributors of these products (NAICS 412000).
Domestic sales include all sales by reporting companies, excluding exports and sales to other reporting companies.
Refinery receipts of crude oil and equivalent hydrocarbons (condensates and pentanes plus) from domestic and foreign sources are for refinery consumption or storage.
Data are subject to revision.
