Sales in the food services and drinking places subsector were up 1.1% to $5.7 billion in June.
Prices for food purchased from restaurants rose 2.5% in the 12 months to June while prices for alcoholic beverages were up 1.3%.
Receipts were up at full-service restaurants (+1.9%), limited-service eating places (+0.4%) and in the special food services industry group (+1.3%), but fell at drinking places (-1.0%).
Sales were up in nine provinces in June. Sales increased in Ontario (+1.3%) on the strength of full-service restaurants and special food services. Sales rose in British Columbia (+1.9%) for the fourth consecutive month. Other notable increases included Quebec (+0.5%), Nova Scotia (+3.2%) and Alberta (+0.5%). Manitoba (-0.5%) was the lone province where sales decreased.
Sales in the food services and drinking places subsector up from last year
The figures in this section are based on unadjusted (that is, not seasonally adjusted) estimates.
Food services and drinking places sales were up 6.0% in June 2017 compared with June 2016.
From January through to the end of June 2017, total sales in the food services and drinking places subsector were 4.7% higher than during the first six months of 2016. The increase was attributable to higher sales at full-service restaurants (+5.6%) and limited-service eating places (+5.1%).

Monthly sales data about restaurants and food services were first published as The Restaurant, Caterer and Tavern statistics in January 1981. In June 1981, unadjusted sales totalled $854.5 million.
Back then, restaurant, caterer and tavern sales were composed of five sectors: restaurants - licensed (43.3%), restaurants - unlicensed (26.0%), take outs (17.0%), caterers (8.2%) and taverns (5.5%). In June 2017, sales were composed of limited-service eating places (44.3%), full-service eating places (44.0%), special food services consisting of food service contractors, caterers and mobile food services (8.2%) and drinking places (3.4%).
