Sales in the food services and drinking places subsector rose 1.2% to $5.7 billion in July.
Prices for food purchased from restaurants were up 2.6% in the 12 months to July, while prices for alcoholic beverages rose 1.2% over the same period.
Receipts were up at full service restaurants (+1.8%), limited service eating places (+0.5%), special food services industry group (+2.3%) and drinking places (+1.8%).
Canada 150 celebrations took place throughout the country in July with many operators reporting increased tourism. Sales were up in nine provinces with the largest increase in Quebec (+3.1%), followed by Ontario (+1.2%) and British Columbia (+1.1%). Saskatchewan (-1.3%) posted the lone decline.
Sales in the food services and drinking places subsector up from last year
The figures in this section are based on unadjusted (that is, not seasonally adjusted) estimates.
Food services and drinking places sales were 4.8% higher in July 2017 compared with July 2016.
Receipts were up at full service restaurants (+5.7%), limited service eating places (+4.7%) and the special food services industry group (+3.1%), but were down at drinking places (-2.8%).

Data from the Monthly Survey of Food Services and Drinking Places, which goes back to 1998, can be viewed on CANSIM. Unadjusted data show that sales have always been highest in the summer months (July and August) and lowest in the winter (January and February).
On average, the difference in sales between the summer and winter months has been approximately 28%. Consistent with previous years, the summer of 2017 is on track to produce the strongest sales this year, with July 2017 sales being the highest to date at $6.2 billion.
