Change is constant when it comes to the cost of keeping a roof over one's head, the lights on and everything that goes along with that.

This month's StatCan Blog post looks at one of the Agency's most important measures, the shelter portion of the Consumer Price Index. It is important and also somewhat complex.

Based on a unique methodology, the index includes both rental and owned accommodations. In the case of homeowners, it takes into account utilities, repairs, maintenance, mortgage cost and property taxes, among other expenses.

As such, the index provides an overall measure of how the costs of running a home change over time for both renters and homeowners.
