Aircraft movement statistics: Major airports, October 2017
There were 479,630 aircraft take-offs and landings at the 91 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations in October, compared with 444,800 movements in October 2016.
In October 2017, growth in both itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) and local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) contributed to the year-over-year gain. Itinerant movements increased 7.4% to 343,841 and local movements rose 8.8% to 135,789.
Domestic itinerant movements (within Canada) rose to 289,821 in October, up 8.5% from the same month the previous year. Transborder movements (between Canada and the United States) increased 0.8% to 41,370 movements, while other international traffic grew 5.9% to 12,650 movements.
In October, 10 airports accounted for 38.2% of total activity. Toronto/Lester B. Pearson International, Ontario, the nation's busiest airport, reported 40,130 movements, up 2.7% compared with October 2016. This was followed by Vancouver International, British Columbia, which recorded 27,270 (+3.7%) movements and Montréal/Pierre Elliot Trudeau, Quebec with 20,130 (+4.6%) movements.
