Please note that the population counts appearing on the Canada's population clock might differ from the official estimates and projections released by Statistics Canada. Canada's population clock is strictly a pedagogic tool and the displayed population counts should be used as a rough indication of the current population levels. Canada's official population estimates can be found in the Latest indicators on the welcome page of Statistics Canada Internet site.
The population clock counts are based on Preliminary Postcensal Estimates as of July 1st, 2009. The growth rate calculated for the year ending June 30th, 2009 is applied to this population and kept constant.
Actually, the clock's counter increases according to an annual growth rate of 1.238%.
As the July 1st estimates are being released in September of the same year, the population clock is usually updated, once a year, during the week following the release of the estimates.
The population universe used for the population estimates is the 2006 Census of Canada universe. This universe, therefore, includes Canadian citizens and landed immigrants living in Canada (or abroad on a Canadian Forces base, attached to a diplomatic mission or aboard merchant vessels) and non-permanent residents. For a complete description of the last census population universe, refer to the 2006 Census Dictionary.
