Example 3: Administrative data

Statistics Canada's Centre for Education Statistics (CES) gathers administrative data from provinces and uses them to produce statistics on enrolment; diplomas and degrees granted; and tuition fees and finances at the elementary, secondary and post-secondary levels of education. When administrative data cannot be used to generate statistics of a particular topic, then the CES conducts sample surveys to produce the information. The CES use of administrative data is a great example of how this type of data can be used to produce more precise information, at a lower cost and without any additional response burden.
